Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
I have heard the term "unschooling," before, but I am now just becoming more familiar with the term. Radical means to me: extreme, especially with regards to how things are thought to be. Unschooling means to me: allowing your child or children to explore and learn on their own terms. When, where, how, what... having faith in your child's instincts to learn, and be there to enjoy the ride with them.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
I have been homeschooling for the past 6 years. I have now relinquished my duties to cram information in to my kids heads. I am scared of going against the grain, but I don't want to do what schools are doing, which is suck the love of learning out of them. It took me years to recover that love and I don't feel like wasting their time, and putting off their aspirations, goals just cause the world around me says they have to know x, y, and z.

a little about me
I stopped going to school officially in the 9th grade but I missed most of every school year since kindergarden. Between moving and "playing sick" I missed a lot of school.

I love being a mom. I am forever growing and learning. I have to remind myself to enjoy life, I get better at doing it each and everyday. More recently I find myself doing it with out even thinking it. I am actually happily married. I can admit that I am wrong but that is not to often. Ha!

Welcome Rebecca.  I hope you find this site to be informative and supportive. I understand when you said that you are scared of "going against the grain".  For myself,  I new intuitively and intellectually that it was absolutely the right thing for me and my family, but I remember when I made the first and final move - I broke out in a sweat ! Know one I knew was doing what I was doing and those I had shared this with were very skeptical. I didn't know about this site then. Good luck with your new world that unschooling a can bring :)
