Robin Dickinson replied to April Jaure's discussion How to help 4 year old handle disappointments?
"I agree, its all about knowing your child and being there with your child in a loving way.  I hesitated to even throw that out there but for us less-enlightened unschoolers, having things spelled out in simple basic terms can really help.…"

Meredith replied to Robin Dickinson's discussion Starting with an Adult "Child"?
"unschooling and peaceful parenting isn't just for the little kids or the teens who have been doing it their whole lives   It's true! And its true because the underlying principles of unschooling come from the commonalities of our…"

Robin Dickinson replied to April Jaure's discussion How to help 4 year old handle disappointments?
"Being a small child is so full of frustrations.  Even in peacefully parented households, everything from schedules to physics can seem to be against them!  I think quite often when we try to help our kids feel better, we end up telling…"

Robin Dickinson replied to Robin Dickinson's discussion Starting with an Adult "Child"?
"Well, after a heart to heart about what he actually WANTED to do, it turns out his biggest desire is to be able to live on his own, cook his own food, and have a rescued greyhound.  To that end, he has now gotten a job at a local office supply…"

"Thank you both for your suggestions.  We are working to maintain our son and marriage as priorities but it helps to be reminded.  I also like the idea of looking at other fields.  I think he really is interested in nursing (which is…"

"You might try reading Parent/Teen Breakthrough: The relationship approach. The relationship is obviously different from a parent and child but you may help you shift to a new way of looking at him and a new way to help him.   Maybe, if you…"

Starting with an Adult "Child"?

I am posting to ask if anyone has any experience starting this sort of thing with an adult?  My college age brother (a decade younger than me) has been living with us on and off for the last couple years.  He moved in for good last November.  He has struggled with everything from depression to disenchantment with education to a belief that there really aren't any truly caring people out there (I love the duality too...All within a minute: "No one cares, no one will ever be there for me when I…See More

Robin Dickinson replied to Amanda Mendenhall's discussion toddler help please

Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
It never seemed that radical to me. Follow your child's passions and enjoy the learning that happens in all of life. But I can't find very many people who don't think I'm off my rocker. So I guess I must be radical after all.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
Since March 2009. Charlie was born in March of 2009.
first names of children
Charlie 2 years old
a little about me
I never intended to homeschool much less unschool, or to natural parent, or many of the things I've done. But as we've made the most loving and reasonable choices for our son, we've found ourselves more and more outside the realm of "normal" and eager to find other people who don't just tolerate us but who do some of the same things.
