I've been detailing my plans for upcoming book and art projects on my Imagination Tribe blog. I know there a few people here who are also IT members, who will see this twice.I’m writing a book currently called “Mending, Making and Mothering”. It’s about living an artistic lifestyle as a family, with case studies from parents who are doing it. I’m interested in documenting how artists combine a continuing arts and crafts practice with parenting, as well as how they prioritize creativity in their…See More

Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
It means I never worry about what my daughter is learning, but trust that she is learning all the time. It means that I trust her to be capable and know her own desires, that we choose a family lifestyle of allowing all of us to fulfil our best potential. Jayn makes her own decisions and I do all I can to facilitate her doing so in all areas of her life, within the context of living in a community.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
Since Jayn was an infant. We always planned to be very relaxed homeschoolers, and when she was a toddler we found unschooling and realized how well it fit our dreams.

To all our friends,

Hard times have come to the Coburn family. Over the last couple of years the various disasters visited on the film industry and a period of bad luck in the professional arena has led to long periods of unemployment for James. This time last year he was prepping his first movie in about a year. He was very optimistic as he had bookings for three good pictures during 2009, and a promise of a full time job teaching at a film school, for between… Continue

Swimming - to "lesson" the experience?

Posted on November 15, 2008 at 11:30pm 2 Comments

This is another article I originally wrote for Connections. It's not very timely I guess, but it may be useful.

Now that summer is in full glow it seems likely that many parents are considering swimming lessons for their children. If they are like us with a pool available in their building, they may be reasonably concerned about safety. Perhaps they… Continue

Made For Each Other - written January 2008

Recently I experienced what felt like a colossal failure. I took a risk, made some poor evaluations, some bad judgments and completely failed in almost all of my objectives for that particular venture.

And as I sat quietly absorbing the realization that my idea had totally tanked I thought about Jayn and how her presence in my life causes me to look at things differently.

Ten or twelve years ago such a failure might have left me… Continue

Oh, gosh, no. We're way too far west for the evac. But apparently, we were right in the wind tunnel for the ashes on Saturday.
At 8:47pm on November 16, 2008, Cheryl said…
ugh, and the piles of ash on our walkways and in our pool really sucks. We have to clean our pool filter & do a lot of extra cleaning.

Did you get the ash & smoke? Yesterday, (sat), was really bad over here. The smell got in the house, but we were pretty holed up away from the ash. We did go out in the afternoon and it was horrible - eyes burned & sinuses clogged from the ash.
At 9:20am on November 16, 2008, Cindy said…
It isn't too bad here, as we are in the Southwest part of the city. It was very smokey yesterday, and I did gather some stuff/ supplies in case anything changes.
