- what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
- Unschooling means taking a backseat, watching instead of interjecting all the time, and supporting whatever my son would like to pursue.
- how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
- I feel like we've been unschooling Xander's whole life. We started reading about it when he was one and became quite interested. We joined some groups and made friends with other unschoolers. At 4 Xander went part-time to our local Sudbury school, which is somewhat like an unschooling school. This year, xander decided he didn't want to go to school and we are full-time at-home unschoolers again.

- I taught in the public schools for 13 years and always realized that if I ever had children, I'd want something different for them. Actually, even my choice of teaching as a career was rather odd considering I'd always been drawn to artsy sorts of things. Maybe I decided that my artist talents weren't huge and since I liked children and my mom was a teacher, well then I guess I should be, too! I was a good teacher and tried to be as creative as the "system" would let me. Now I just want to grow more as a parent. Things I like doing include hiking, gardening, kayaking, going to parks (amusement and nature), making jewelry, sewing, creating stuff, making messes, organizing, ice skating, going to museums, traveling, visiting. I'd like to spend more time reading, creating, learning more about being really free, creating some cool business that would make some money. Things to work on....not getting stressed about stupid stuff! Hope to meet up with more like-minded people and continue our journey through life. Sandi

There is a homeschooling group, but I was not able to connect with anyone that unschools. That was several years ago, so hopefully things are different now. I did connect with the NC Unschoolers (you can find the yahoo group) and met up with them on occasion. Also, there is a group of unschoolers in Asheville. Good luck with your decision to move there and if there is anything I can do to help, just let me know ;)
