Hi Sandra,

I would like to say thank you for the work you have done. Your work has brought me to a new and greater understanding of my relationship with my children. Being with my children has been a personal growth experience as I have had to re-shape much of what I thought I had figured out. It is always a pleasant experience though coming to new understanding, new ways of living, and thinking as a family. Finding more harmony and balance in our relationship as a family. Most importantly my children have an equal and valid voice no matter how young. Their emotions, thoughts, and opinions are always heard and considered. I do the same for my husband and him for me. As a result we are happier as a family. In fact it's because of that , that we are Unschooling. My children were struggling in Homeschool as was I as thier "teacher". So here we are. Relieved as a family to be the owners of our lives.

Yours was the one I was up late reading!  :-)  I did not think either Kohn or Gatto were unschoolers and I know Gatto can be a bit cynical...still seemed like interesting reads.  I'm pretty good at taking what I want and leaving the rest.  Thanks for adding me as a friend!

Just got your Big Book of Unschooling in my mailbox yesterday.  Also, reading Teach Your Own-Holt and bought two Alfie Kohn books and one Gatto book today.  Last night I was up until 12:30pm reading.  Wish I could lay the books on my head and just soak up the words while I am sleeping!

Hi! I didn't know where I could send this link to you but I thought you might like it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/interactive/timelines/language_timeline/index_embed.shtml

It's a fun/funny site about the english language.

Thank you. We live in Harford County Maryland. It is 25 minutes northeast of Baltimore. Despite suburban sprawl, it is still considered a mostly rural county. We are fortunate that every September local farmers alot a few of their fields for sunflowers. They are very gracious and have let us tromp around their property and take pictures. Again, thank you for sharing so much of your life. I really am receiving a lot of encouragement from your book and blog. Keep shining!

Hi again Sandra! Thanks for your detailed answers to my questions in the discussion. I see what you are trying to tell me and I KNOW it is absolutely true. It stroke me when you said that if they want to go to college they will eventually figure out the path of tests and other requirements. Of course! It is so obvious and I did not see it. I will relax and enjoy this wonderful time with my boys, play with them and tell them I love them more often instead of "Don't you want to read a book or something..?" :P

Thanks Sandra,

Karin

HI Sandra,

I found you on the web not too long ago, mayby about 4 months. I am in CHILE at this time, and I am starting Homeschooling our 3 boys. After trying and failing to "teach" them anything, I opted to follow a more relaxed way, and ended up reading and embracing unschooling. But since I am just starting I still have fears and anxious moments that tell me I am not doing enough for their education. I thought that I would write to you for some encourgament and some advice. At this time, I need supprt and in Chile, it is hard to find it. THSX!!!

Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
Learning always in all ways, learning how to make choices by making choices, and living whole lives in the real world.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
My children are 23, 21 and 18 and have never been to school, so all of Holly's life and most of Kirby's (since he turned five).
first names of children
Kirby Dodd 23
Marty Dodd 21
Holly Dodd 18
a little about me
I used to be a teacher, which was what I had wanted to be since I was six years old. I taught Jr. High English for six years and retired. :-)

I didn't plan to have children. Kirby was on his way as an "oops" (we were married, but undecided about children), and then we LOVED being parents so much that if we had started earlier in life we would have had more than three.

I live in New Mexico and have since I was nearly seven, and I love it completely. (This used to say "nearly six" but it was a fumble, and I've corrected it. We moved in early June and I turned seven in late July.)
