"Rain is back from college for winter break, after a successful first semester - she has her own column on the school website, does a weekly radio show with her roommate, has lots of new friends, got a job working with kids, made the rugby team (but…"

Sarah S. commented on Meredith's group unschooling for social justice
"The St. Louis one is pretty chill - I haven't gone but a couple good friends have. I wouldn't worry about being arrested, if you're just checking it out and not actually protesting. I think the only arrests were in the first day or…"

Sarah S. replied to Sue Patterson's discussion Grown Up and moving on... in the group Got Teens?
"I've always worked, in one way or another, but I managed to be with Rain most of the time. In California I worked as a "teacher" for an independent study charter school for a while, when Rain was little, and she would come with me…"

Sarah S. replied to Sue Patterson's discussion Grown Up and moving on... in the group Got Teens?
"Me! I have one daughter, now 18, and have been a single mom the whole way through so for 18 years it's been the two of us happily unschooling... and now she's headed off to college almost a thousand miles away. She's pretty thrilled…"

Sarah S. replied to Rynalee's discussion Teens & Underage Drinking in the group Got Teens?
"I think instead of saying "you're allowed" or "you're not allowed" I'd say something like, "Here's the law, and here are my concerns." If my daughter and a couple of underage friends were over…"

Sarah S. replied to Rynalee's discussion Teens & Underage Drinking in the group Got Teens?
"My daughter is 18 now. I also grew up having my own (tiny) glass of wine with meals, and so I never saw alcohol as something adults-only and taboo. I was somewhat worried about my daughter's drinking because her father (and perhaps her two…"

Sarah S. commented on Meredith's group unschooling for social justice
"Frank, a Tunisian woman told me a year or so ago, "The law cannot change the hearts of the people." I thought of that when I read your piece (my daughter and I spent last summer there, and my research is based there). She was talking about…"

Sarah S. replied to Meredith's discussion what does it mean to value what kids value?
"Are you under the impression that TCS advocates this? TCS advocates looking for mutually agreeable solutions, but if one can't be found, then the child's wants should take priority. As to the rarity of people actually wanting completely…"

Sarah S. replied to Meredith's discussion what does it mean to value what kids value?
"Not if she's feeling resentful about doing it, it won't. It will just lead to further separation. I don't have to balance my advice with TCS advice. It's a radical unschooling board here, not a TCS board. You don't have…"

Sarah S. replied to Meredith's discussion what does it mean to value what kids value?
"Win-win is your phrase (or "jargon", if you prefer). It's not one I've used, and not one anyone else has used on this thread, as far as I recall. Here's what I said about about two people wanting opposite…"

Sarah S. replied to Meredith's discussion what does it mean to value what kids value?
"  I'm not sure if you're interpreting something I've said to endorse "weaseling" or if that comment is based on some past experiences you've had with people who said they followed TCS. That's not something…"

Sarah S. replied to Meredith's discussion what does it mean to value what kids value?
"I was involved in the TCS email list during the mid-nineties, and one of the most helpful things I took from that was the idea of finding mutually agreeable solutions. Very few situations are really as black and white as they originally seem (I want…"

Sarah S. replied to Stacie K's discussion What If Sometimes We Know What They Need Better Than They Do?
"So the problem is that he feels grumpy and disoriented when he wakes up, yes? That's what I'm reading. And he doesn't feel this way when he wakes up earlier? I would maybe see if there are things you could do to help him feel better…"

Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
Whole-life unschooling, or unschooling as a lifestyle rather than just for academic areas.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
It's hard to quantify, I guess. I became interested in unschooling before my daughter was school age, but she did go to kindergarten, and then we unschooled until last year, when she went to Russia for a year and attended school there... and now she's back in the US with me, unschooling again.
first names of children
Rain is 17.
a little about me
Always-single mom, happy anthropology graduate student
