Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
I like what someone wrote once about unschoolers living as though school did not exist. That's pretty much all. I don't intellectualize it much.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
35+years
names and ages of children
Trilby, 40
Ethan, 38
Maia, 18
a little about me
I'm married to Dick Maehl, and we live with Maia on our farm in Costa Rica and our cabin in (ahem) Concrete, WA. I'm a family doctor, mostly involved with home births and medical care of women and children.

I love to cook and bake, and make breads and sausages for restaurants and B&Bs in my area. I enjoy playing bridge, reading, languages, and travel. Dick and I have designed and built our houses, with a little help from our friends, and we grow as much as we can of what we eat. We do home exchanges to make our travel jones financially practical.

I'm very serious about critical thinking and logic. I'm incredibly frugal. I have the most charming and beautiful and intelligent granddaughters in the world.

Our day...still in progress at 2:00 pm...but it's going to rain

We live on a farm in Costa Rica, so read this with a Spanish accent.

Dick got up at 6 and started the coffee and logged in to my Pura Vida Unschooling Conference website to try to help me out. Our website originates in the US, so we have a problem if we need tech assistance. Which we always do. We're stuck on Pay Pal Procedure. Maia's asleep in the window bed, where she fell asleep last night.

I get up at 7, a little earlier than usual, because our passports expire TODAY, and we need to go to… Continue

Hi Sharon,

I just read your comment on critical thinking. We're planning to add a critical thinking section to our site (naturalchild.org) starting with this video: http://doiop.com/shermer_baloney_detection_video . Do you have any other suggestions for this ne section?

Thanks,

Jan Hunt

Wow, you seem like someone I would gravitate toward naturally. We designed our house, too, although in Central Texas I have not yet gotten good at growing what we eat. Far from it, really.

Hi Sharon!

My name's Andy Cronin, and my wife and I live in Olympia, WA. I'm roaster/green coffee buyer for Raven's Brew Coffee here in town and Alaska. I'd love to know more about your farm and coffees! Anything and everything you feel like sharing! I've not been to Costa Rica yet, but it's on my list. I was in Mexico in Feb of this year visiting some growers and had a great time. Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Hmm...the problem is that I didn't create it...I think Arp did. I'll email him.

Thanks!

you can go into the event and edit it since you are the one that created it (there is an edit box on the right). you could put the website link instead of the yahoo group link. or just add the link in the event description. you can fix the incorrect info as well. hope that helps.

Oh man would I LUV to come to Costa Rica. Beautiful pic of Maia. I am totally enthralled with the stuff on your page here. I went to Mexico once for a month and out West with family twice when I was a kid, and that's the extent of my travels, well other than NYC and Miami. Costa Rica is whetting my travel appetite. Maybe someday! I hope you are doing Pura Vida more than one year. Cuz it would be a great excuse to go. :)

If you ever make a picture of that eggplant dish you put on Foodies in the RUN I want to put that wonderful recipe right up top.

Hey, Sharon, Welcome to Washington Radical Unschoolers! Do you remember me from Bellingham? Maia and Lauren hung out two years ago when you were up here :) I still have pictures of them on my phone!
