Roblox lets you create games and levels of your own. I don't know how extensive it is. It would be worth an explore, though.

Are those the sort of thing I'd buy a disc or download? Are there demos somewhere? I don't know that graph paper would help Mo. I think at this point that I need to find her a platform (if that's the word) for creating simple games of her own whi...

Platform studio & Atmosphir both use grids to create video games, so I'm gonna give my son some graph paper and see how he likes that. Good idea, I can't believe I didn't think of it. LOLOL

Do you think grid paper might help her work out her ideas?

We've played the demos for Lego Batman and Lego Indiana Jones. I had no idea how fun they would be!

DS10 has a binder with hundreds of pages of hand drawn game plans. He finds inspiration and creates his own games hoping to one day be a game designer. What a great idea. Morgan talks about ideas for games of her own and sometimes draws on the to...

We're a big gaming household. Its led us to all kinds of learning. From writing editorials to gaming magazines, to creating home made alterations on Nerf guns. (DS13 found a way to propel the darts further and faster.) DS10 has a binder with hund...

Awesome. My son is a total gamer. He has been since he first got his hands on an NES control pad when he was 3. He loves the old platform games of original NES. Super Mario Brothers series is one of his favorites. He also likes nintendo 64 games, ...

I don't have any words of wisdom here, but I like Pam's suggestions. The tension between my 5 & 10 year old has subsided a lot since I started spending more one-on-one time with each of them. If you think of it as "sibling rivalry" (as in the titl...

At the moment Fallout 3 is quite popular, that and Lego Batman. Yesterday, in the car, I used the word atomic and Linnaea asked about it. She asked because there is an atomic bomb in Fallout 3 and she wanted to know how what I was talking about wa...

I will start with the learning. Ocarina of Time taught Austin (now 11.5) to read. He wanted to play the game so bad that he learned to read it so that someone wouldn't have to sit with him to read to him when he played. As for what other types of ...

Thank you, ladies! Pam G. -- I'm not sure what I meant by "what kind of learning" -- subjects? I guess I'm thinking more along the lines of things like strategic thinking, visual-spatial reasoning ... I'm not sure. I'm just exploring. I am not a ...

A brief answer for now. I am so blown away at how good Lukas is with video games! He asks me all the time what words say, what scores and numbers mean such and such. He has (and is)learning so much it's hard to list! Strategy, problem solving, how an...

Here's an exercpt from an old blog post of mine on the subject - Feb 2007. Its a blog I kept for the purpose of "reporting" to state and his bio mom, hence the references to a "learning plan": We've subscribed to Runescape! Rayan loves it. He's s...

Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
Just continuing to live life! Letting go of the need to measure up to external standards and allowing my kids to do the same.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
We have been homeschooling for about 5 years; we are new to unschooling.
names and ages of children
Sarah -- 14, James -- 10, Trishy -- 5
a little about me
It may seem odd to some people to define us as radical unschoolers, since I have one daughter who takes public school courses and another with whom I use lesson plans. But I am going through a radical shift in my approach to life and education. Each of the kids is charting his or her own course. My oldest chooses to take several classes at our local public high school. She spends the rest of her time talking, thinking, watching movies, and writing movie reviews. (Please visit her site -- link #1 -- and leave comments!) My youngest craves large doses of mom-directed "Kindergarten" activities; she spends the rest of her time playing, visiting friends, exploring her world, and trying to establish her place as Queen of the Universe. My middle child embraces something closer to what most people envision when they think of radical unschooling. He is confidently asking me to provide him with library books and other resources and step out of his way. ;-) He enjoys fantasy literature, nature books, art, video games, movies, and music.
