"Tanya, I loved reading this. my 2.5 year old is currently going through a similar love with a different train story - Chuggington (it is new here in the UK, but on the web too). He tried hard to learn the name, as it is quite a difficult one to say.…"

"I actually teared up reading this. My son, who is now 9, was obsessed with Thomas and I was crushed when I realized his interest was leaning more toward legos as he got older. But Thomas is still in the playroom and even my 13 year old neighbor…"

A Glimpse of Unschooling in the Works

My son, Talon (3yo), received a wooden train set for Christmas this past year from his grandparents. I picked it out as a gift idea for them thinking Talon "might" like something like that. Turns out, he LOVES something like that! Ever since that fateful Christmas morning, Talon's enjoyment of trains has snowballed into a full-blown passion. This little boy eats, sleeps, and lives by his trains; and I have been honored and privileged to witness his love of trains bring him not only hours of…See More

"Congratulations! My son was born 7 weeks premature, and he will be 3 years old on Friday! I remember all that breast pumping like it was yesterday. I've been enjoying all his baby pictures again this week, as I seem to do every year around this…"

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
In one word, Freedom.
In three words, Freedom to Be.
In five words, Living and Learning in Freedom.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
We aren't officially schooling anything yet since my son is 3 years old, but I have been reading about unschooling and implementing unschooling principles since he was an infant.
first names of children
Talon - July 2006 (currently, 3 years old)
a little about me
Terry (my SO) and I are transplants from Wisconsin to Arizona, and we have enjoyed every minute of our last four years in abundant sunshine. Our son, Talon, is 3 years old, which would make him a native of Arizona. My favorite pastimes currently revolve mostly around reading and learning about respectful parenting and unschooling. I also enjoy keeping up our family blog to keep all our friends and family back in Wisconsin up-to-date with current pictures and what we're up to. One thing I'd like to do more of is writing, so I'm hoping I will start to do more of that in documenting our unschooling journey. I absolute love spending my days with Talon and witnessing him grow and learn every day. It's just amazing to me. I also work part-time from home in the evenings as a medical transcriptionist. In our unschooling journey, we are definitely in the deschooling phase as parents.

December Blog Carnival: Working parents

We are a dual income family here, though I have cut my hours to part-time work since Talon was born. Terry is a project manager for a construction subcontractor, and his income is the bread and butter for our family. I work at home as a medical transcriptionist for about four hours/day. Terry works days; I work evenings.

For the most part, this works out exceptionally well for us since I have my days free to spend with Talon, and Terry is usually home in the evenings while I work… Continue

Dancing into the Morning

Last week, I caught a glimpse of what felt like unschooling should really feel like when you forget about the worries of doing things differently and simply embrace the moments. For quite a while now, Talon has been a night owl. His naps have been pushed back to early evening, which means he's not ready for bed until the wee hours of the morning. Luckily, I am also a night owl and my body can work with this. However, I have to admit that I'm not always easy-going about it. There's the tension… Continue
