180 Days of Unschooling

Hi, everyone. I'm going to go ahead and add my project here. I'm documenting 180 learning moments in my 5 year old unschooler's life to parallel the 180 days of kindergarten that most 5 year olds are beginning this time of year. I'm five days in so far, and I hope to end more or less at the end of spring/beginning of summer.  http://honeyhousekindgarden.blogspot.com/ Thanks for looking! See More

Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
Radical Unschooling is what you might be doing if you mix the following, in and around your family:

Space (real and metaphorical)
Resources
Freedom
Support
Love
Respect
and a willingness to question your habits in light of the above.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
I've been reading about and researching and trying and watching and waiting to see unschooling in earnest since the summer of 2007.
first names of children
I have a boy born in November, '05, and another born in January, '09.
a little about me
I have an extremely low caffeine tolerance. I camp, hike, sew, knit, take pictures, garden and read. I am fascinated by fertility. My favorite tea is Chamomile. I don’t like to drive at night. I like writing letters. I eat leafy greens. I used to wear size 7 1/2 shoes, but now I wear 8’s. I don't travel particularly often, but I love doing it. I practice personal politics. I do yoga from time to time. I walk my dogs almost every night. I talk to my houseplants. I have freckles. I collect feathers. I’m allergic to cats. I have nightmares about killer whales. I carry a pocket knife. I believe in collectivity and positivism, but I spend a lot of time alone in doubtful mind. I want to keep bees and chickens in the near future. I work in an after-school program, and I bring my boys with me. I believe in magic and souls. My sisters are both beautiful. I bite my nails. I’m a Sagittarius with a Taurus moon. My favorite number is 11. I have faith in a handful of things. And I have grand plans to hike the Appalachian Trail someday.

Saturday football

LSU's on TV, the potato salad's done been ett, and my sock isn't knitting itself. I'm going to join the daddy and the older boy in the living room cheering on the purple and gold, or at least doing his special cheer with him when they score. It's a good one--a rolling of fists, then a hands-up RAWR, followed by open-hand claws grabbing the open-hand claws of a family member, and another RAWR.

I hope he remembers Saturdays in the fall with the windows open and the kitchen…

Teresa. Please know that others on this forum share views similiar to Jeff's and would also have a "mama freakout" moment under similiar circumstances. Allow your intution a chance. Children are BE-ings in this workshop called life and while it would be awesome if we could all thrive in the freedom of doing whatever we want whenever we want ... boundaries are important! Additionally, some of us don't live with the privledge of simply "trusting that our male children are not stereotypes".

Teresa, sorry that your discussion topic has blossomed into what seems to be a full-blown war of the apparently "established" radical unschooling opinion and my own contrasting view. My initial response was inspired by one thing: mine and my wife's concern about what you expressed in your post. I find it further disturbing that others responded to you by writing off your concerns as "mamma freakout" etc. In the same way we confront conventional schooling we must also confront the dominant pop-culture trends in our society that promote violence, sexism, and war. In short, I just wanted to offer a different perspective. And if you'd like to further discuss the issue or would be interested in some resources let me know. Best wishes to you and your family!
