Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
Letting-go of almost everything that was ever intentionally taught me by parents, school and society, and taking an utterly free-spirited, yet 'guided' approach with my children and their young lives and introduction to the world.

We strive to take a 100% 'autonomous' approach, introducing them to many wonders in life, but letting them pick-and-choose from what they've experienced. My son (5) is very strong-minded, and knows exactly what he does and doesn't want to do at any point in time. So, he really is learning fast to be his own master. (My daughter is 2, and she's also very strong-minded.) I am strong-minded too, so you have to spare a kind thought for my husband who balances out the unit. ;-) We don't find it easy balancing everyone's (conflicting) preferences and wants, but this is what we're working on. Can imagine this is the same for many families young to parenting and unschooling with very strong-willed, highly spirited individual natures.

In moments / periods of imbalance, I try to remind myself that our aim is to ensure our children are - and grow-up - happy, healthy, and considerate. But also, we need to balance their needs with our own as well, as we've been naively prone to ignoring ourselves in the process up until recently. Have learnt first-hand this is NOT what unschooling is. If we achieve this balance most of the time, then everything else is by-the-by really...Key objective for all in the family? Be HAPPY, HEALTHY & CONSIDERATE of other people and living creatures.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
Since the birth of my children. But trying to really embrace a pure unschooling life / approach / philosophy the past couple of years especially.

a little about me
Live in Hampshire, in the UK. 35 years old. We live as a work-at-home, unschooling family. My husband runs an online marketing / web consultancy from home, and we also co-run a Personal Styling business, selling online image / styling consultations. It's really a case of all-hands-on-deck across parenting, business-running, unschooling etc. Put like that on paper, it sounds like everything runs like a dream. ;-) We strive to keep our children maximally free, healthy and happy (in spirit, emotionally, mentally and physically), but I'd be lying if I didn't say that some of our days completely turn to custard, when I'm left utterly stumped as to how best to re-balance a situation, and start to question myself more than usual. (Must admit, I tend to do that much more in the second-half of my cycle!)

Am an avid-reader on many a subject, love organising out-of-door trips / events / casual meet-ups for my children and other home-ed and unschooling friends. Also like writing poems here-and-there, and helping friends through life's ups-and-downs. Looking forward to lots more travelling over the years, especially since my husband comes from New Zealand and we also have family in Australia.

Always on the path to seeking as free a life as we can, in every way. On the path to recovering fully from M.E. (CFS). But we're all learning every day, and making plenty of mistakes, but also still giggling lots, along the way.

Dear Tracy, thanks so much for your thoughtful reply.  It sounds like the south has a lot to offer in terms of an unschooling community.  I'm actually from the North and most friends and family are based there so that is my first port of call, but I really feel its most important for us to be near other unschoolers, so your answer is very helpful.  I'll let you know how it all turns out - it's a big life change for us!  Thanks again, Michelle
