michelle N replied to Lauren Fisher's discussion Does embracing unschooling philosophy also mean that we can reject labelling our children?
"Read the article and several more by the author. He also has a fantastic (alarming) article stating that most teachers would label 25% of the boys in their class as ADHD. This is defiantly a blog worth following."

"Hi Maria,  my son was one of those boys.  He's been diagnosed ADHD, and I too am not going to deny the reality of ADHD for some children.  But I do believe way to many kids are being labeled when really they just don't fit…"

"I had a similar experience today with an online group I belong too.  I was following a chain about a parent worried about curriculum for his 4-year old and also wanted to know about testing the young boy for ADHD. I feel truly sorry that this…"

michelle N replied to Lauren Fisher's discussion Does embracing unschooling philosophy also mean that we can reject labelling our children?
"It was a label that started our unschooling journey.  After a couple of years of struggling in school and some other concerns I went the psychology route and had my son evaluated.  We got the standard ADHD diagnosis, and honestly if you…"

"Thanks. The comment about using strewing as bait was dead on. I have read most of sandra's website and I did read that post. But now I get what I did wrong. I pulled out my husband's huge coin collection which I thought would interest them…"

"Unschooling "should" be enjoyable - at the very least, better than school or homeschooling. But while deschooling can be stressful for some, it isn't necessarily. It can be a pretty easy going time of rest and recouperation - it…"

"I try strewing things around the house and periodically ask my kids questions about their activities. The strewing usually bombs although yesterday my son saw me reading a Nintendo magazine and he snuck over to listen to me read some of it to him.…"

"Ditto that. I've been reassured by other comments about my son's Roblox playing. But I can't get past the nagging guilt that I'm just being lazy! I've tried to suggest other things, Lord knows he has other games to play. And…"

Should I be doing more?

My family is only a couple of months into deschooling, my dd is 12 and ds is 9. Both were in some sort of school until last fall. As I get better at appreciating my children's interests I find that I am mot really needed much. There are days when my son needs nothing from me other than snacks and a couple of hugs. Most of the day he is happily occupied and doesn't really want me getting in the way of his game.I like these easy days but I wonder if there is something I'm missing, something more…See More

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
Allowing your child to find their passions in life.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
Eased into homeschool with my son in the summer 2010. Tried the Unit Study approach for two months then my lovely 6th grader decided to bag middle school and join in on the fun at home. We decided to deschool at that time with the intention of being full-on unschoolers eventually.

Strewing bombs right now too, I've become pretty lax about a lot of things - like our schedule. We sleep when we're tired and eat when we're hungry. I do miss my "alone" time after he went to bed, but such is life. I have to keep my house pretty clean because it's for sale and we may get a call to show it and have to have it SUPER clean inside 1-2 hours. I feel like I should be doing more to "teach" him, but he seems to be doing pretty well on his own.
