Boy did I get in trouble for "The Wall", teacher didn't like that song! I guess she didn't see the rythmic poetry in it. I was in 6th grade and we were allowed to take records to school.

Okay, the hyper link think is making me crazy, so I'll just cut and paste the darned links!

http://www.newhorizons.org/

New Horizons is a great site for learning about learning - its also great for following other links. A really good starting place. This next lot is pretty mixed, as you'll see, some sites, some links to papers on related topics. Its interesting to see what's left in my bookmarks.

The next two are Montessori:

The next few links fall more into the category of theories of personality rather than learning per se, but I'm sure you've noticed how you kids personalities affects the ways they learn!

Whew, okay, that should keep you busy for a couple days! If the links don't work, email me and I'll send 'em more directly: meredith@quilted.net

You asked about my home-study program... at the time I was mostly interested in young children, so I did a lot of research online into Montessori in particular - a lot of the basic theory ends up being pretty compatible with unschooling and - and took some online courses in that.
There are also a number of good books on natural learning with young children: Literacy through Play is excellent, as is Much More than Just the ABCs. More than Counting has some really useful information in the intro about how children construct mathematical concepts, but I have to say that Montessori sources are even better... Michal Olaf's site in particular. Oh, gosh, I don't know how to make links in this format. Arrrggghhh.
The biggest thing I did, really, was to give myself permission to actually *do* the home study thing and then make the time to dig through websites for interesting stuff. Okay, I'm going to try putting some links together in another reply - we'll see what happens.

Sorry, the camp-out is now full. The last 2 rooms just filled this morning.

But we also organize an Unschoolers Winter Waterpark Gathering that will be in northern Ohio Feb 2-6, 2009. Its for Unschoolers around the country. We have unschooling funshops, speakers, talent shows, ball room dance, etc.,,, Plus, there are no conference fees, as everyone volunteers their time. And the resorts gives our group unbelievably low room rates that includes the waterpark passes. Check out the info - its listed under "events" on this Radical Unschoolers' Network .

Hi!

I saw your profile and noticed you're in Ohio . I'm also in Ohio (Sandusky). Where are you?

And, since you mentioned you love to camp - have you heard about the the UGO Camp-out (Unschoolers Gatherings of Ohio) Sept 4-7? I'm one of the organizers and as of the other day we now have space in the main lodge for another family (up to 8). Its a great way to get to know other unschooling families in a fun and relaxed environment. Check out our website at: http://www.ugocampout.org/. If you're interested, let me know ASAP.
