Our Homeschool Journey
This is our first year homeschooling our four kids. Our oldest son is 13 going on 14, and is in the 8th grade this year. Our oldest daughter just turned 12, and is in the 7th grade this year. Our youngest daughter is 8, and in 3rd grade now. And our youngest son just turned 6, and is a 1st grader!
We are nearly certain that all four children fall within "gifted" ranges. But to date, we've only been sucessful at getting the two older ones officially tested and confirmed as "gifted". Other than health issues that three of our four kids are struggling with (Our oldest daughter is a Type 1 Diabetic, our youngest daughter is showing many of the signs of also having a metabolic disorder of some form - diabetes or otherwise, and our youngest son has been diagnosed with pectus carinatum and mild scoliosis), I would say that the difficulties that come with gifted children is our biggest challenge - especially when it comes to our oldest. Our youngest daughter still needs help with her speech, so we will be working with a speech therapist once a month and doing the rest on our own at home to improve her articulation and correct "slightly immature speech" tendencies. It should be simple enough to manage. =o)
We are using a "mix and match" approach to our cirriculum: Saxon for math, Mosdos Press Literature for the older kids, Go Phonics! for the younger two, Science and Science Explorer, etc. We still haven't nabbed all the stuff for all the courses yet, but we should be able to get the rest of the books and basic materials here soon. =o)
We are homeschooling through a "Charter School" hybrid program. We couldn't be more pleased with the support, freedom and resources that have been made available to us. =o)
We are delighted to be homeschooling and look forward to meeting more homeschooling families. =o)
