I am delighted to announce that I will be writing a regular column for Natural Life Magazine about green crafting.
My column begins with the Summer/July issue.

Being in school again (community college) is taking its toll on me. I go in spurts of cramming and stalling. And the whole while I'm doing this back and forth dance I'm sick. I'm disgusted. I wish I could get back my love of learning that I have discovered since becoming a mother; especially an unschooling mother. I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to do that AND pursue my AA degree...? In the meantime, my desk will be a source of… Continue

Bits of thoughts I'm putting here so I can find them later if I need them.
"...they [children] need access. They need a chance, sometimes, for honest, serious, unhurried talk; or sometimes, for joking, play, and foolishness; or sometimes, for tenderness, sympathy, and comfort. They need, much of the time, to share your life, or at least, not to feel shut out of it, in short, to go some of the places you go, see and do some of the things that interest you, get to know some of your… Continue

Holly is in the next room and I can see her working happily on her MySpace stuff. We're eating "fancy oatmeal," she said--slow-cooked "real" oatmeal, with raisins and butter and brown sugar. She put half&half on hers and asked me about the relationship between half&half and cream, so I looked up the definitions of light cream, whipping cream and heavy whipping cream. Half & Half is about like light cream.
She was writing about Casa Bonita (or using it as the response on a… Continue

I have been wondering about living peacefully lately. There are so many ways in which our society couches violence behind gentle facades that I wonder if I will be mired in it. Learning to recognize manipulation and coercion and to resist it or move away from sniping to live joyfully, and peacefully takes a lot of dedication.
I want to give my children the gift of a parent who is living fully and able to connect with them in a loving non-judgemental way and of course to face the… Continue

That grew in MY YARD. I'm so happy.
There are another couple of views of it here: http://sandradodd.blogspot.com/2009/04/flowers-and-zombies.html
It's the first iris of the year, and it bloomed down low. Most of those are two or three feet up, and this one came out close to the ground.
That other purple bud to the right is vinca, not an… Continue

I am getting psyched & ready to go to the Santa Barbara Zoo! I am excited and can't wait, we used to go to many zoos when the boys were younger, but I can't remember the last time we went? Jake is still sleeping, Josh is on the other laptop and eating more cereal, he's showered and counting the minutes until we can leave :)) I am still in Ventura at my sisters place, since we returned from Florida last night after a wonderful week in paradise. Well, Jake just woke up abruptly by knocking… Continue

I wrote something on the music thread today on unschooling basics and I don't take time to write as much as I'd like so I'm posting it here as well. :
I just wanted to share something that happened here just yesterday. An unschooled friend Drew(16) was spending the night at our house and wanted to know (since I play a little piano) if I could help him figure out the theme to Bella's Lullaby from the Twillight soundtrack. "Well, sure!" We listened to it on the computer and replayed a… Continue

I'm draining the hot tub to clean it, but it is COLD outside, so I'm planning a quick wipe and not maximum sanitation, as this all involves water.
Holly is asleep. Marty is asleep. I hear a clock ticking, a table fountain making noise and me typing. That's nice! I like it. I hear the furnace, softly, too. The house got cold.
Lately I've been working on my unschooling pages, cleaning up links to other places that aren't there anymore. And I'm moving some of the good parts… Continue

My husband and I laugh as we think about Easter. We love watching the boys have so much fun on the treasure hunt, but the truth is there is something strange about the bunny and egg thing.
Let's face it, we all know a bunny delivering eggs is about fertility symbols and fertility happens in the spring with our gardens beginning to take seed and grow.
But bunnies and eggs are so much more literal with such a adult theme, it feels… Continue

We just attached a document to our introduction in the forum
and thought we should announce it in a blog post
It is a well written and inspiring unschooling article that was in the Sacramento Bee awhile back. It was the original article that enabled us to actually identify what we had been organically doing with Jade & Jaron's homeschool education.... Child… Continue

Yesterday I wrecked a car. That's not good.
I wrecked two cars, actually. Neither driver was hurt and there were no passengers. Photos and details are here:
The post under that has several photos of Marty and his girlfriend Ashlee.
Under that are two recent photos of Holly, who has been wonderful in my life through several… Continue

Today I did kind of an odd experiment that actually worked pretty well, and I thought it might be helpful for others to try too. I've heard unschoolers talk here and there about how saying yes to your kids can be healing. Well, I don't have kids yet, so I decided to spend some time imagining if I did. Basically listening to what *I* wanted to do, and imagining if it was my kid asking me, and trying to find ways to say yes. I didn't realize how much I tell myself no unnecessarily, until… Continue

Okay, I admit it! Sometimes, I doubt the universe will provide. As I continue to move forward and I do what I love, every once in a while a voice pops into my head that says,
"You are living in a dream world! Life is not a dream and you have to be rational and practical."
Do you know that voice? When you begin walking on your authentic path, this voice is LOUD! There is a real fear of the unknown.
However, as I… Continue
