Deadline: noon. Timestamp?

M's end of course assessment for his astronomy course was due in today by noon. So what time does he upload his work? 12:00 exactly!! Peace & harmony now restored & he's looking forward to doing 'nothing' though of course as we all know that actually means lots of stuff.
Meanwhile the girls are engrossed in playing a Harry Potter game they picked up at a car boot sale for £1. Which all leaves me free to try & get some jobs done - hoping for sun tomorrow so I can dry the washing.

Dreams on paper

Today we sat down and wrote down our dreams and goals for the next four to five years. Somehow they seem more attainable once they are written down.

Cliff has been busy submitting his college transcripts to a four year college near us. He has been accepted and is in the process of deciding his major. His major will depend on how many years it will take to finish his bachelor degree. So far a management degree would take him two years to… Continue

Finding the Phone Problem

An update....

Hubby spent about an hour with the phone company last night, via his cell phone, trying to explain exactly what the issue is. Seems every time they would try to do a line test, our connection was lost. Considering we were down to 1 working phone and no phones ringing into the house, that wasn't the best way to have a test end up.

What seems to be the problem is the FIOS (fiber optic) box located on the side of the garage. Something inside of that has gone up.… Continue

New here

Wow, this is a really cool site!

We are are new to the unschooling journey and I am still feeling my way around it. I am a researcher and ideas type of person so mainly I have been reading my little heart out and mulling over the ideas....and mostly driving my husband crazy. I have started saying yes more to my children and question areas of our life where I controled *everything*. The academic part mostly comes easily to me because I have seen it's success pretty… Continue

Phones Are Ringing?

The last two days have been really weird. We are getting phone calls but the phones aren't actually ringing. The only way to tell that someone has called is by looking at the flashing red light on the caller id box. After that, we have to call the answering service to see if any messages were left. It's like something out the X-Files (which we have on our brains---since we're watching the shows season by season).

I hope we can get this figured out soon. It's uncanny to walk by after… Continue

A Typical Day...

Monday I was thinking of writing one of those "Typical Day" posts...forming it in my mind as I went along...

Then I sat down for a minute to rest, and the dog jumped up on my lap, and peed a little.

I yelled, and he started squirting all over the place.

I jumped up, yelling, "Put him OUTSIDE!!" "Bring me a clean dress!" as I ran to the shower.

While I was showering, I decided NOT to do a Typical Day post.

I don't think I could stand people… Continue

Some photos from Kirby's Party

These are clickable thumbnails from Saturday's party, mostly of chopping milk cartons with swords. The girl in the red hat is Marty's girlfriend Liz. Kirby is wearing grey. Marty shows in profile once, but there wasn't a face-on of him. The really old woman with glasses is me. The guy with the guitar is my nephew, Elijah, who was mostly homeschooled and is four months older than Kirby (he's my sister's middle of three). There were three Learn Nothing Day shirts there, and none on my family! So… Continue

Ourselves

"I want to do it mine self," is a common refrain heard around here.

Today we were playing with fire--lighting a candle, singing Happy Birthday, and blowing it out. Dmitri (3) was focusing on the lighting the match part. He told me, "I want to do it mine self!" He tried several times with some success and then changed his mind.

"I want to do it ourselves!" So we started striking the match together again. Neat new word use and incredibly sweet moment. :-)

porridge & maths

Making porridge this morning - The 'clear' button on the microwave doesn't always work, and there was time left over from the last thing we'd cooked in it, so K worked out how much longer she'd need to put it on for after the time that was already entered. Then her second bowl was smaller than the first, so she reduced how long she put it on for proportionally. 2 & a half minutes, so converting that to seconds. The '3' doesn't work so she then figured out the nearest time that didn't… Continue

Learn Nothing Day

Emma was telling me about Anna falling out of the neighbour's apple tree..."Her skirt came up to her waist!"

I asked Anna if she learned anything today, and Emma said, "She learned you shouldn't fall out of trees unless you have shorts on."

The book I am reading called "Wild Mustang"

Im reading this very cool book about a wild mustang named dragon. it is based on a true story.

Dragon was a colt that was born in the mountains and was the wildest colt of them all.He lived in a herd of about 11 mares and the lead Stallion. He took his color from the Leader, who was white with red freckles all over his body. But he had the size of his mother.

At a young age he was pushed out of his herd and was forced to live on his own. With out the Leading Stallion… Continue

Nearly Learn Nothing Day!

Hours now. Probably already started on the other side of the world. Soon it will be just a memory (and a bunch of stories and photos!).

Holly did another piece of art--this time physical and not pixelated.

In a few hours Kirby will be home and people will come and hang out with him so I'll wait for a quieter time, maybe ask him to go on errands with me for the party or something, so we can hang out a bit. Just a few hours will do me. This is like… Continue
