Dancing into the Morning

Last week, I caught a glimpse of what felt like unschooling should really feel like when you forget about the worries of doing things differently and simply embrace the moments. For quite a while now, Talon has been a night owl. His naps have been pushed back to early evening, which means he's not ready for bed until the wee hours of the morning. Luckily, I am also a night owl and my body can work with this. However, I have to admit that I'm not always easy-going about it. There's the tension… Continue

Gypsy mama and kids in search of sunny shores

I am itching to trade some beautiful antique Japanese dolls for something bigger and better (like trading up to an RV or bus conversion). We started with a small Matchbox bus a few years ago. My husband is going to college full-time, but I am itching to hit the open road with my two boys and the dog. We want to travel during his breaks, and I'd like to travel full-time for a few years as a family at some point.

Right now we own a house near Des Moines, Iowa. We've lived here for 6… Continue

"Senior" Anxiety

My daughter is 17 years old and has had the misfortune of being thrust into a group of kids since we moved 2 years ago who have been college bound from birth. With no choices of their own to be made, they have just followed the track set before them - and are seemingly happy doing so. This has made things difficult for Kendra who feels that she is not "doing enough". She has been tense lately about her life, where is it going, what is she going to do with it - and I was wondering if there are… Continue

"A non-violent revolution".

"A non-violent revolution" is what Congressman John Lewis just called what we are witnessing right now.

NC Democrat Kay Hagan has taken Elizabeth Dole out of the Senate, and Democrat Bev Perdue is poised to be the first female governor of our state. And at this moment, with over 70% of precincts reporting, 50% of the presidential vote in North Carolina has gone to Barack Obama. NC has not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since Jimmy Carter.

I'm… Continue

There is officially a teenager in the house...

My oldest son turned thirteen today. He has been awake since yesterday. He was too excited to sleep. And he logged onto the computer at 12:01 am in order to sign up for a myspace page. And spent the next several hours making it his. Then the search for friends started and he was so excited...he found his older brother on there (Same biological mother, different fathers). They moved to Idaho and we moved to Vancouver around the same time from the Seattle area and the boys lost… Continue

We're always thinking ....(TTT)

10 Random questions my kids asked me, during an Unschooling day.....

1. "Mom, if there was more gravity, things would weigh more wouldn't they?"

2. "So how much protein should I eat?"

3. "What is an actual serving size like?"

4. "Can a person get too much calcium?"

5. "What if no one wanted to vote for Obama or McCain? How would we pick a president?"

6. "HOW DO I GET DOWN FROM THE TOP BUNK!"

7. "Wait a minute. If you… Continue
