I'm always hopeless at spotting "connections' as people like to talk about on unschooling lists, but had a beauty yesterday.
It started with Tombliboo (2 years 2 months) watching Little Einsteins (repeatedly) for several hours...this boy watches more dvd's than any 2 year old I…

Our gorgeous boy is now 10 years old...where did that time disappear?
He said he had the "best day ever...well, apart from one of course"...that's the day he was born, nothing compares to that :0)
It started quite late, which was good- gave me some time to g…

I have been busy trying to think through the logistics of having a school-child in an unschooling family. The speed at which Tombliboo walks (or rather "makes stops") will practically make it so that by the time we get home from walking J-Man to school, it will be time to start walking back!
Well, not quite...but it isn't a very thrilling prospect. I can see me suggesting he takes his bike fairly quickly, though I doubt it would be safe.
So, I tried to phone the Ministry of Education to let th…

J-Man dropped a bomb on me a few days before Christmas...he wants to try school.
I panicked inwardly, but hope I remained calm outwardly.
We discussed it a little, but I knew I would support this choice just as I have supported his desire to learn karate or guitar (both very short-lived).
There was little to do about it so close to s…

We went to see Wall-E...it was fun, well not really for Tombliboo (22 months) - but the rest of us enjoyed it.
At one point, he and EVA were floating in space, and J-Man (9) asked, "What is that Mum? Is it a vortex?" (Eeek, I have no idea!)
I had no idea...then Princess (6) said, "No it's a galaxy- the Milky Way, I think."
But how did she know? I am reasonably certain I have never even mentioned it (feeling suddenly like there are a million things I haven't mentioned and should have).
"How d…

Thank goodness...the exemption has been issued. No questions asked, just approved the day after it was sent. Easy-Peasy...why didn't I just do that in the first place?

Broad Curriculum Areas
Princess will learn at home, in the company of her mother, older brother J-Man (exemption received, Jan 2005), and younger brother Tombliboo (nearly 2). Her father will also play a major role, as will various family and friends, and members of the community.
We see education as a marathon rather than…

J-Man (9.5 years) made it to level 60 last weekend. That's a big achievement for anyone- just over 18 months ago, that would have been the highest level (now the highest level is 70, and probably 80 come January '09).
He's come a long way since the days when I was called in to h…

Princess (nearly 6) just came to ask me to make her a sandwich.
She puts on the voice of Edd (the really dull-witted one) from Ed, Edd, and Eddy. She does it *really* well.
I said, "You're so cute!"
She replied, "And you're so sweet. You're like sugar!"
I laughed, and said, "Th…

In the weekend I went to a Creative Memories (12-9pm) class. I was late, and expected to finish early with Tombliboo breastfeeding around half-hourly (or less…if I sit down, he is on me). He managed very well apparently, though he was very keen for “boobah” when we got home.
I w…

This is the mind-map I drew up for Princess's exemption from school...I wrote things under "broad curriculum areas" as often as I remembered, and until I ran out of space. It will be sent off with a cover letter explaining a bit more about our lives, mostly that life is not neatly…

It's getting harder and harder to maintain my blog (again)...mostly because right now J-Man is in to World of Warcraft again- so I am only getting little snippets of time on here. I can spend as long as I want in the mornings before he wakes up, but that isn't really how I like…

Tombliboo is like a little learning machine…he can’t help it- it’s his age/stage…but the coolest thing ever is that it doesn’t end- he’ll carry on being as vitally interested in his world, just as his siblings have been before him. Curiosity is not only the domain of the toddle…

2 things occurred to me yesterday, throwbacks from when I was maybe 7 or 8.
Firstly, I was jumping on the trampoline with Tombliboo- then got off asap…our trampoline is very old, and it won’t be long until it is defunct- I am too big for it. Oh wait- I have way more than 2 issue…
