the network for radical unschooling families
Let the life long learning journey begin! Today IS day 1 of Unschooling. Really I guess we are in a Deschooling mode. Joe has been in the grip of public schools for the last 6 years, really his whole life, starting with Daycare, since he was just a wee one. So we have some unlearning and deprogramming to do (myself included). I am learning to TRUST him and his brain. I know he is smart and has many interests, it just the letting go and trusting him to find his own path, that is hard.
I've spent the last 3 years researching Homeschooling and it has taken me that long to convince his Dad (ex-husband) to let us embark on this leaning adventure. 3 years! The moment I started learning about Homeschool, I found out about Unschooling. It was the first 'style' I clicked on. BAM! I knew right then and there it was the 'right' style for us. When Joe is interested in something, he really lights up and explores that subject like I have never seen him do for his assignments in public schools. As I type this he is playing an online game with a few of his friends. Letting him do this is hard, I don't want him to play video games all day but, I know that is an interest of his. If he can't make it to the NFL he wants to be a video game programmer...... again I know that every move he makes he is leaning in some way shape or form :)
Later today I am planning a Nature hike. He really likes watching streams and creeks flow. He likes to watch the different movements the water makes. Taking the easiest way through....we often build rock and log dams to see what happens. It's time for me to dig out our boots and pack a lunch. We're of on an adventure!
Blessings!

We were in the position of convincing my partner's ex to let us unschool so I know that hassle of "geez if only we could do what we Really want...". The first day after we'd been granted leave to unschool, Ray was giddy all day. Actually, I think it lasted a couple weeks before he settled down from "giddy" to "wow" to the new normal. The worst thing Ray has ever said about unschooling is that even if he gets bored he's glad to be done with school and home school.
