How to?

here's my question? I would love to do something like unschooling. What do you do if your son just wants to watch tv all day. What if I say I'm going out to the park you want to come and he says no. I can't leave him at home by himself as he is just in 6 years. How do i pose good questions and spark their interests to find things to do?

Comment by Joyce Fetteroll on April 20, 2012 at 4:41am: "The park" may be too vague to spark interest. It may be like asking someone if they want food to eat or a book to read. So add more specifics to it create a more easily imagined picture. Someone may not want to "bake" but they may want to bake chocolate chip cookies :-) Mention the swings, or something new you saw on the way, or suggest taking a toy or ball to kick around, or a side trip.

And rather than picture it as trying to get him to watch less TV by going to the park, picture the park and any other activities as adding more for him to choose from. He may still choose TV, especially if it was limited before, but it will be because that's the most interesting thing to him right now.

Or offer to record his favorite shows, or find them later on hulu, if he'll go to the park with you. Maybe invite another boy he likes to go, so it will be going to play with his friend, and not just going to the park with mom.
