the network for radical unschooling families
Our unschooling adventure has just begun and each day brings with it a new opportunity full of hope and excitement or uncertainty and doubt. Three weeks ago, when my thirteen year old and I decided to take this turn in her education, I knew I had tried all other options, to make public school work for her and that it wasn't going to change, we had to. While I have always held faith in alternative education, I didn't see unschool as an option for her, not until we hit the wall in the system. Now I know that in this environment, she can thrive, find her voice and direct her own life with learning.
I must admit though that I worry. I see myself more enthusiastic about all the options she has available. I want for her to be better organized, create a plan to follow and put herself out into the community. I understand the need to have a deschooling period and reassure myself that we can take our sweet time now for vacation and unschool throughout the summer.
I need a handbook. Sage advise from parents that have been here with teens. Do I just let go of expectations all together? Let go of my need to see progress? All that I want is for my daughter (and my other children too) to be well adjusted, balanced and fulfilled.
