Radical Unschoolers Network

the network for radical unschooling families

A year ago seems so long ago now and so much has changed for us as we continously strive for a happier life. A year ago was just going into our second year of unschooling and I was still full of doubts, panic attacks and feeling as if I was never doing enough. A year ago hubby was working as a fast food manager of 11 years and was had his second heart attack at age 38, quickly working towards his 3rd and perhaps his last. Not to mention we never saw him as he was always working.

One small comment was made, can not even remember what is was but was an AHA moment for me and I fully embraced Unschooling from then on. I started freelance writing and writing a lot on unschooling topics and me and hubby decided to move from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to North Carolina where he left the 9 - 5 world for good. He lost 50 pounds and from my cooking a healthier diet for him he has not had to take any blood pressure or heart medications in a year now and is really healthy. When I am not writing, I help hubby scrap metal and so far between the two we seem to do okay and make ends meat. We are both always home though and available to the kids and able to go and do what ever when ever we want.

We just celebrated our one year anniversary on September 1 of moving down here to North Carolina and leaving the 9 - 5 world. It has been amazing not just for our new found happy lifestyle but the journey of all the learning as well. My daughter is 9 and from ROBLOX a site online she has been learning to read in leaps and bounds where a year ago she was struggling and I had suspected Dyslexia. I no longer fill with doubt or episoded of panic wondering if they are learning enough.

It really is an amazing journey once you just let go and embrace it fully!

it's funny (on the reading side), my oldest hatest reading when she was younger. we were doing regular homeschool-fight! i gave up, went on the deschooling mode with regular trips to the library and she got into computers. the problem was, i worked nights. so i slept a lot, and wasn't much help. she had to read the instructions to the games, to learn to play. that is how she learned to read, and she reads great!
had to learn-if they're interested, they will learn it.

My son was having trouble w/ his reading when he was in (1st grade) "reg school", once home Yugioh cards, subtitles on TV & comic books helped change all that, nothing like adding the ingredient of "FUN"!
