Radical Unschoolers Network

the network for radical unschooling families

Yesterday we got a cat named Remmy. The kids have been wanting a cat for a long time now but we have been moving a lot and unable to have pets due to apartment policies and such. We have decided to settle at least for the winter and possibly longer and the landlord mentioned we could get a cat if we wanted to.

I am hoping when the newness of the kitten wears off the kids will quit fighting over the kitty. The original plan was to get 2 kittens but we could not afford them from the shelter (its over $100 per animal plus additional fees and a huge invasive interviewing process) and our attempts to find a pair by other means did not pan out.

Remmy other then being a single kitten is just what we were looking for. He is old enough to be litter trained and young enough to not quite have his personality set. He is playful but not too playful and cuddly but not in your face and bonus he came with all the essentials. It will be interesting to see how his personality develops with his interaction with the family.

I am worried that he might have ear mights or fleas as he is scratching behind the ears. The people we got him from think it may just be stress as they have a dog who did not get along with the kitty which is why they gave him away.

Precious. We are cat lovers. I had 5 at one time, now we're down to 2. The others passed away of old age, 18-21 years old. My sister uses Front Line for ticks and mites. I used to bathe my cat for removal of ticks/mites. She was mostly white with big black spots. She was beautiful. Of course, she hated it, but after it was all said and done the ticks would fall off immediately. I'd run warm water, while in the bathtub (don't let child try, cat tends to get away and scratch) and shampoo her head gently. Afterwards, I'd wrap her up in a towel and dry her as much as I could and leave her to dry on her own (don't try blow dryer). I don't bathe my cats anymore, I wasn't too pleasant for either party. So far, my 2 cats seem o.k.

Turns out Remmy is not a 12 week old boy cat. No he is in reality a 4 month old girl cat! SO we re-named her Tesla. Yes I know Telsa was a boy we find the irony fitting.
